My brush with the managers position
As a senior lifeguard for the NYC beaches i was promoted to being in charge of bay 12 in the Coney Island Beach. There are 21 bays that make up this beach and bay 12 was mine to manage. The issue that arose right away was the relationship between my fellow lifeguards. Once their equal, now i was put to manage them. I had three people to manage, and at first evrything was fine. I tried to please everybody on the bay by letting them have a say in how the bay was going to be run. It became a proble when i could not allow all request to go through was left to choose. Towards the end of the summer I decided to ignore people's demands and do what I felt was proper and follow my supervizors orders. You cannot please evrybody so at the end of the day just do it the way that it affects all of the employees equally, whether it is abd or good.

I have never been in that situation but I can just think of all the issues that could probably arose. Thats a difficult situation to be put in. Like you said, you used to be there equals and now you are there boss. It was probably a tough situation for them to get accustomed too. I guess as there prior equal you wanted to please them, but its hard almost imposiible to please everyone. So you did the best you can and as long as you continue o run the bay in a way that everyone is treated equally and things get done, then everything should be ok. You win some and you lose some.
You mentioned how you decided to basically follow the mission in a hard time which is a very good quality. You also mentioned how, you started to ignore your employees, because they were getting out of hand. Do you think that is the best way to go about things?
Yes, you can't satisfy everybody in work. But, wait a minute, isn't the "customers" should be satisfied? At least it is in my marketing text book. But you are manager here. It's not about pleasing them or reponding to their requirement. It actually comes down to the people who go to the beach. How's this sound? I think you just have to do as you been told by your boss and in your way. At the least, you are the one got promoted. Isn't it a way to completement on your working attitude? Be confident in yourself.
i totally know what you mean. when i got promoted most of the people i worked with thought that it ment that they could slack off and do what ever they liked since i was in charge. the fact of the matter is that you are being paid more, and you were chosen to be in charge for a reason, therefore you need to seperate yourself. you need to have a friend relationship with them outside of work and work relationship during work. and if they dont listen try to communicate to them that your their manager and even thou you are friends outside of woirk this is your job, and if you dont do it then you wont have the job
